POWER OF THE MESSAGE

Psalm 92:13-14 (KJV): “Those that be planted in the house of the Lord shall flourish in the courts of our God. They shall still bring forth fruit in old age; they shall be fat and flourishing.”

William Seymour, the African American preacher behind the 1906 Azusa Street Revival, led one of the greatest movements in the Pentecostal faith. At the height of the revival, hundreds to thousands of people would gather at his church to partake of what God was doing.

History records the sad ending to the revival’s glory days. From hundreds in attendance, the membership of the old Azusa Mission dwindled to only twenty members, its once people-filled building virtually deserted by the time of William Seymour’s death.

While many reasons may be given for why this particular brook dried up, one critical reason of interest is the message that Seymour preached. He avidly believed that one could lose their salvation if one sinned in the flesh. He disagreed with William Durham, one of his parishioners, on this doctrine. Durham preached that people could not lose their salvation if they sinned in the flesh.

As a result, people left William Seymour in droves to listen to Durham’s message. Even when Seymour padlocked Durham out of the mission, the crowds left Seymour and followed Durham to his new building.

I know many ministers who have fallen prey to strange doctrines. They received ‘revelations’ that dug the graves in which their ministries were eventually buried.

Never underestimate the power of the message you preach. It is pivotal to the life of your brook. What you teach can dry your brooks or keep them flowing.

I understand the revelation of this generation and teach it in line with the truth to the glory of Your name and the expansion of Your kingdom. Amen.
